About the duo

No Pressure No Diamonds by Charles Hollywood Beach Please by Charles Hollywood

Two brothers, one pseudonym — paintings that look as though they've lived a hundred years.

Charles Hollywood is the collaborative pseudonym of two brothers — Jackson and Wilson — from Darlington in the North East of England. They came to painting from competitive sport — football and golf — and from a shared background in psychology. Both show up in the work.

The visual grammar is the vintage Penguin Classics paperback, a lineage that runs through Harland Miller, whom they cite as a chief influence. But the text on each one is contemporary, deliberate, and theirs — and the surface that holds it is built entirely by hand.

Multiple layers of acrylic, deliberate distressing, a varnish overlay. No stencils, no templates, no shortcuts. The conviction they carry over from sport is simple: craft is built, not granted — and you can see it in the surface.
